Teaching Meter in Elementary Music during March Madness

Teaching Meter in Elementary Music during March Madness

March Madness…but make it elementary music!

Ok, I’m not really a basketball fan, but we all know that March Madness is a time when basketball fans come together to celebrate the excitement and thrill of the game. So, why don’t we bring that same excitement to the music classroom? That’s why I created Meter Madness, a resource for you to teach meter and time signatures in a fun and interactive way.

Meter Madness includes a variety of activities, including a task card sorting activity, composition activities, and a relay race. This hands-on approach to learning enhances students' rhythmic skills and musicality.

First, you'll receive a Meter Madness Relay Race Game. Students are divided into 2-4 teams (depending on class size). The teacher uses the Rhythm List to call out a certain rhythm. One person from each time races to find that rhythm or meter in the stack of cards in the middle. The first team back receives a point. The team with the most points at the end of the game is the winner! This activity can be adjusted for different class sizes and can be used to reinforce the concepts learned during your meter unit!

Not studying meter? No problem! Instead of calling out the time signature, simply call out the rhythm and have the students find it!

Next, a Meter Madness Task Card Sorting Activity. This meter task card sort helps students recognize durations and how they fit into each meter or time signature. 40 task cards with standard notation rhythms are included. Students read the rhythms on each card and sort them into the correct meter stack. As an extension activity, students can play each of the rhythms on instruments or write them on a separate page to practice writing rhythms. Your kiddos will love the hands-on approach to reviewing meter and time signature!

Finally, a set of Meter Madness Music Composition Cards & Beat Strips. Students will use basketball themed words to create compositions in given meters. There are many ways to use these composition cards including: rhythm reading, rhythm writing, rhythmic dictation, rhythm composition, improvisation and more! When you purchase, you'll also receive bonus meter composition worksheets that students can use to write out their creations!

The composition activities provide students with the opportunity to apply what they have learned by creating their own compositions in a variety of meter signatures. This allows students to not only understand the concepts but also to use them in a creative way.

With a focus on meter and time signature, this resource is a must-have for any elementary music classroom! So let’s bring March Madness into your music room with Meter Madness!

Don't miss out on this exciting and engaging activity to your elementary music students. Get your hands on Meter Madness today!
